As a mixed Korean-American, food is near and dear to my heart.

Learning more about Korean recipes along with her allowed me to connect to my heritage in a big way.

Growing up mixed race, I was always surrounded by different types of food. From Korean-style seaweed soup to all-American mac ‘n cheese, trying foods of all different cuisines has always been a part of my life.

My mom inspired my love of cooking with daily fresh-made dinners of all cuisines. She learned how to make traditional Korean banchan and Indian curries because we loved them so much. And learning more about Korean recipes along with her allowed me to connect to my heritage in a big way.

Then in college, my friends and I would experiment with different recipes – a Thai green curry here or a Mediterranean gyro bowl there. My love of food only grew. And whether it’s making naan from scratch or trying to roll mochi ice cream balls, I love challenging myself with new things

Family taught me about the importance of a good meal and good company. At house parties hosted by my Filipina auntie, lumpia, adobo, pancit, and all manner of delicious dishes filled the kitchen. For Thanksgiving and Christmas at my Italian great-grandmother’s house, we’d all bring an appetizer and play and chat until the main courses were finished.

And at recent family gatherings, my mother-in-law’s warm Cuban cooking had me drooling while we played dominoes. I want to inspire others to create community through food, whether it’s hosting a dinner party or just enjoying a night in.

Now that I’m living in Japan, I get the chance to experience new Japanese foods and try my hand at other foods using the ingredients available to me here.

So, this is my ode to eclectic foods. I’ve been able to connect with different lifestyles and cultures through food, and it’s one of my great joys.

In Korean, “bibim” means mixed, and “bap” means rice – or food. I think it’s a perfect analogy for this collection, and I hope you love these recipes as much as I do.

Love,
